Fire spreads quickly in a campsite: tents, caravans, trees and vegetation are highly flammable materials. Italian regulations impose specific fire prevention requirements on outdoor accommodation facilities, with obligations that depend on the size and type of facility.
When a fire prevention SCIA is mandatory
Under DPR 151/2011, campsites are subject to inspection by the Vigili del Fuoco if they:
- Have more than 25 pitches (categories B and C of Annex I to DPR 151/2011).
- Have fixed structures (bungalows, mobile homes) with an area > 200 m².
- Have gas distribution systems exceeding 5 m³/hour.
- Exceed the occupancy limits established by local regulations.
Essential requirements
- Distances between pitches: at least 5 meters between adjacent tents and caravans (DM 2014).
- Escape routes: unobstructed and signposted evacuation routes, with a minimum width of 3.5 m for vehicles.
- Fire extinguishers: one per 200 m² of area, class A-B-C, inspected every 6 months.
- Fire hydrants: in campsites with > 200 pitches, a fire-fighting water network with hydrants every 50 m.
- Staff training: at least one staff member per shift with fire safety training (low- or medium-risk).
- Open-fire ban: signage and monitoring during periods of drought.
⚠ Failure to comply with fire safety requirements may result in the facility's immediate closure by the VVF, in addition to criminal penalties for the owner. Conduct a fire prevention inspection at least every 3 years.
