Campsite Wi-Fi: Hotspots, Guest Authentication and Guaranteed Bandwidth for the Property

Wi-Fi is now an essential service, just like electricity. But designing a wireless network for a campsite with 150 pitches is completely different from designing one for a home: distances, obstacles, and thousands of connected devices. Here is how to do it properly.

Campsite Wi-Fi hotspot captive portal outdoor network

In summer, an average campsite has 400–600 devices connected simultaneously. Smartphones, tablets, smart TVs in bungalows, IP cameras, and IoT systems. If the network is not designed for this load, the result is an unusable connection for everyone.

Recommended Network Architecture for Campsites

  • Fiber-optic backbone along the main roads: low cost (€ 1–3/meter for cable + installation), zero latency, and no degradation over time.
  • IP65 outdoor access points every 50–80 meters (Ubiquiti UniFi, Cambium Networks, MikroTik): each covers 30–40 pitches under normal conditions.
  • Separate VLANs: guests, management/IoT, staff, and cameras. Each network is isolated for security.
  • Captive portal: the guest authenticates using the reservation number or the code received at check-in. Ovvo Camping automatically generates the codes.

Authentication Integrated with the Management System

With Ovvo Camping, the Wi-Fi system automatically receives the access credentials associated with the reservation. At check-in, the guest receives a Wi-Fi username and password valid for the duration of the stay. At check-out, the credentials are invalidated without manual intervention.

Bandwidth Management per Pitch

With a professional Wi-Fi controller, it is possible to limit bandwidth per device or per pitch (e.g., 20 Mbps guaranteed download). This prevents a guest streaming in 4K from degrading the connection for everyone else.

Indicative budget for a campsite with 100 pitches: € 8.000–15.000 for hardware and installation. ROI: reliable Wi-Fi is mentioned in 73% of positive campsite reviews on TripAdvisor.
